We visited the East Austin Farm, where we helped with tasks such as pulling out invasive weeds and spreading compost and chicken fertilizer across different patches of planted seeds where they will eventually harvest fresh produce like beets, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and so much more. The Urban Roots team were incredible to work with, shoutout to our guide George for spending the morning with our team and sharing freshly harvested cilantro, dino kale and spinach with us! If you are in the Austin area, we highly recommend visiting their farm for a tour or volunteering on Saturday mornings to help cultivate beautiful food together.

We took a guided tour throughout the shelter to learn more about their amazing efforts like sponsoring animal care, foster programs, educational events and a teaching vet hospital for training veterinarians. We helped out with some tasks like sorting donated toys, cleaning the visiting rooms and windows, organizing food, and sprucing up some of the cat apartments. Afterwards, we got to meet some of the paw-dorable dogs and cats from the shelter. If you live in the Austin area or love supporting no-kill shelters, give Austin Humane Society a follow and stop by to give a loving furry friend a new home!

Our volunteers worked in the food sorting area of the warehouse, working at different stations that included creating vegetable bags, sorting vegetables and bundling vegetables into 10 pound bags, cleaning the workfloor, and more. At the end of our time, we were able to bundle 520 bags, equaling out to 5,200 pounds of food or 4,333 meals! We love being able to help out our local Texas communities and give back to our neighbors in need. Thank you again to the Texas Central Food Bank for having us!
